WESTERN HORSE
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Equus ferus occidentalis
BEHAVIOR
Wild horses form harems lead by a stallion. As socially complex animals, these ungulates use a variety of vocalizations and body language to communicate with each other.
DIET
The western horse likely had greater dietary variation than modern horses, incorporating both grazing and woody browse in differing proportions given local availability.
HABITAT
Built for speed and cursoriality, the western horse preferred open rangeland where they could fully exploit these adaptations.
