ANCIENT BISON
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Bos bison antiquus
BEHAVIOR

Roaming in maternal bands and bachelor herds, ancient bison were seasonally present in La Brea, annually migrating en masse during the late spring & early summer.
DIET

The mesowear of La Brea's bison shows closer similarities to extant wood bison (Bos bison athabascae) than plains bison (Bos bison bison), implying a greater consumption of woody plant matter that changed over time.

HABITAT
With a fossil distribution stretching from Alaska to southern Mexico, ancient bison occupied a wide range of environments, including deserts, prairies, woodland & scrubland.
